X-Men: First Class 01/06/11

'X-Men: First Class' really didn't have a big act to follow with Wolverine in the critics eyes. What this film does, therefore, is restore wavering faith in the X-Men franchise.

Boasting a pretty impressive cast (January Jones aside) with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in the roles of Professor Charles Xavier (Professor X) and Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) respectively, this prequel shows us how the mutants discover their powers and what moulds them into their mature selves.

Arguably the best X-Men film so far, the character development and relationship development between these characters is far superior to anything we have seen before. McAvoy's charmingly confident, witty and caring Xavier is in vast contrast to Fassbender's driven, cold and scorned Lehnsherr but their relationship is intriguing.

Kevin Bacon's ex-Nazi Sebastian Shaw is the catalyst for Lehnsherr's revenge fuelled rampage. Shaw tries to push young Erik to reveal his power through threatening him with his beloved mother's death. At failure to perform his power for Shaw, young Erik's mother is killed.

We don't get to find out much about Shaw's 'Hellfire Club' of mutants, vaguely their names but little development or information. The sexy but ever-wooden January Jones does just about enough in her role as Emma Frost.

Having waxed lyrical about character development, it would, however, have added much more to the film as a whole to see more of the young mutant's in more depth. But it is hard to see where director Matthew Vaughn could have squeezed that in without pushing this over the edge as the film stands at 2 hours and 12 minutes long.

Any historical or political faults in this movie are definitely outweighed by supremely strong leads (McAvoy in particular) and impressive visual effects.
