Bad Teacher 22/06/11

The supporting actors steal the show in this comedy that is never quite as funny as it promises to be. Having a script with as many holes as a string vest means that performances have to patch together something that isn't altogether that salvagable.

Fantastic British actress Lucy Punch shines in her supporting role as Amy Squirrel, a try hard goody two shoes teacher and Diaz's character Elizabeth Halsey's polar opposite. Jason Segel is, as usual, priceless as persistent gym teacher Russell Gettis; his comic timing is quite the gift!

With sub plots flying around left right and centre, Diaz does a good job with the material given to her. Thinking about this character, I think Diaz is the actress that would spring to mind immediately, there's no doubting she's not talented but cheap jokes have had the life hammered out of them here.

The plot sees Halsey being ditched by her fiance after he discovers her money grabbing ways. Halsey then must return to the school she loathes teaching at and makes it her aim to find herself a rich man to marry. In amongst all this, she meets Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), a well off colleague that she attempts to woo by getting fake breasts...

Writing this down really brings to the fore how thin the plot actually is!

Of course, comedies shouldn't get wrapped up in being structurally perfect but completely bypassing quality for a cheap laugh is inexcusable in any genre.

As a whole, 'Bad Teacher' is amusing but a lot of the jokes fall short of what is to be expected from Hollywood produced comedies these days. Lets just say I giggled but didn't roll in the aisles.
