Way back on the 9th February, I saw the beginning of this trailer and immediately thought 'MatthewMcConaugheyterriblecheesyromcomfest' (hash-tag that bad boy). But after giving it a chance and watching it fully I was so excited to see this adaptation of a Michael Connelly novel in it's full glory; and in it's full glory it certainly was.
McConaughey puts in what I see as a massive career-best performance in his lead role as Mick Haller. Haller is a charismatic and charmingly arrogant criminal lawyer who has bagged a rape and assault case. The defendant is Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe), a rich kid from LA who's family will pay through the nose to get his name cleared as quickly as possible.
With many twists and turns in this intelligent and engaging script and strong performances from all of the cast (with notable mention to the fantastic as ever Marisa Tomei in her role as Maggie McPherson) this film is a credit to the original novel and an amazing watch. I 100% recommend.
